LED lighting contributes to energy savings and sustainability by improving working conditions through deliberately directed light and lowering the energy needed to power lighting fixtures. While upfront investment can be sometimes be a deterrent, the ROI (return on investment) for lighting retrofits can sometimes be less than one year. For facility managers responsible for building upkeep, time is money, and because changing LED bulbs happens far less often than usual traditional lighting, facility personnel will spend less time on the ladder changing bulbs and more time devoted to other pressing needs.
Lighting controls can often magnify energy savings. Lighting can be controlled via time of day schedules and/or occupancy/motion sensing. Daylight harvesting can also be employed to utilize natural light from skylights and/or windows. Actual light level sensors then dim or turn off the building lighting fixtures.
